הלכות שבת פרק כ״ז · 5 Questions
Question 1
How far may a person travel from their city on Shabbat?
2000 cubits (about 1 km) from the last inhabited structure of the city. This is the techum Shabbat — derived from the wilderness travel restrictions.
Question 2
A person's Shabbat limits end at the beginning of another city. How far may they go within that city?
If your limit reaches a city, the entire city is considered your "4 cubits" — you may move throughout it freely.
Question 3
You're forced outside your Shabbat limits by a flood. How much may you move?
Even forced displacement leaves you with only 4 cubits. The techum is lost regardless of the cause. You're "stuck" in your new location with minimal movement.
Question 4
Witnesses must testify at a rabbinical court on Shabbat. What is their travel allowance?
Court-authorized travelers receive their full 2000-cubit range — to their destination and back. Their testimony is a mitzvah overriding the normal restriction.
Question 5
How is the boundary of a city measured for techum purposes?
Measure from the outermost inhabited structure (house, barn), then add 70⅔ cubits (the side of a standard encampment square) — that's where the city officially ends. The 2000 cubits begin from there.
